SCHOOL INFORMATION

The school fosters an atmosphere of intellectual engagement and rigorous debate, where students confidently tackle complex concepts and delve into interdisciplinary discussions. Central to Winchester’s academic ethos is the Div programme, a distinctive course that blends history, literature, philosophy, art and scientific thought, encouraging pupils to think critically, creatively and independently.

Outside the classroom, extracurricular pursuits thrive. A large proportion of pupils learn at least one musical instrument, supported by a well resourced music department and frequent performance opportunities. Artistic activities range from fine art and design technology to theatre, photography and Winchester’s long standing tradition of Caledonian dancing.

Sport is a major part of school life, with football, cricket, rowing, athletics and golf among the most popular. The school also maintains its traditional game, known as Winkies, which fosters camaraderie and continuity across year groups. Pastoral care is anchored in the house system, which provides stability, familiarity and close relationships. With increasing numbers of day pupils in the Sixth Form, houses continue to serve as the heart of pastoral life. Families often praise the warm and communal atmosphere, where shared meals and daily routines contribute to a strong sense of belonging.

ADMISSIONS

The admissions process for entry at 13+ begins early, with families encouraged to explore the school and attend open events in the years preceding application. Registration typically takes place during Year 5. Candidates then sit the ISEB Common Pre Test in Year 6, assessing verbal, non verbal, mathematical and reading skills. Selected pupils are invited to Winchester for interviews, where academic potential, engagement and personal qualities are assessed.

Offer decisions are confirmed prior to senior school entry, and candidates subsequently sit either the Winchester Entrance examination or the more advanced Election examination in Year 8, depending on their academic trajectory.

The school also admits a cohort into the Sixth Form, with assessments, interviews and strong GCSE performance required. Winchester seeks pupils who demonstrate intellectual curiosity, academic promise and a readiness to contribute to a community rooted in scholarship, integrity and independence.
