The University of Essex is spread across three campuses in Colchester, Southend-on-Sea, and Loughton. Since being established in 1965, the university has grown to be recognised for its strong humanities departments. Since winning University of the Year in 2018 the university has extended an international focus in both its academic curriculum and its wider research goals. Subsequently, the university is home to an internationally recognised research department. The university has produced numerous acclaimed alumni, from presidents to economists to architects to astronauts.

In 2025 the University of Essex celebrated its highest ever ranking, coming in 12th, largely due to its highly regarded departments. Namely the university is 21 departments and schools, with Sociology, Economics, Government, and Language and Linguistics being noted for their excellence. In addition to these departments the university hosts a Human Rights Centre, the Institute for Analytics and Data Science and the Institute for Social and Economic Research. The institutions support the rigorous academic research carried out by students and academics. The university is also home to modern sport facilities, notably supporting their accomplished football team.

ADMISSIONS
The University of Essex follows the UK standard application process through UCAS but also allows applicants to apply via the Direct Admission form, which can be found on the universities website. The university is particulalry attractive to international students, offering the Essex Global Talent Scholarship, which can provide a 50% discount on the first-year of tuition. Additionally the university is home to the East 15 Acting School, which accepts auditions alongside applications.
